WORKSHOP: THE EMOTIONAL ENGINE OF STORY
THE THREE PILLARS OF READER IMMERSION
Workshop Description
Why do readers become deeply invested in some characters while remaining emotionally distant from others?

In this workshop, April Gardner reveals the three pillars that drive emotional immersion—dialogue, interiority, and body movement—and explores the psychology behind why they work.

Drawing from storytelling craft and cognitive psychology, participants will discover how these three elements guide readers through three essential questions:

Dialogue: Who are these people to each other?
Interiority: What does this moment mean to this character?
Body Movement: What does this emotion feel like?

Writers will learn how dialogue invites readers to interpret relationships and subtext, how interiority gives emotional meaning to events, and how carefully rendered body movement allows readers to experience a character’s emotions from within.
Through The Emotional Engine Lab, an interactive scene experiment, participants will see how dramatically these three elements can transform the reader’s experience.
