Called to Write? Stop Trying to Be Someone Else

What happens when you're called to write but the writing life God gives you doesn’t look like the one everyone else tells you to build?

Author Marilyn Turk's story is also about what she has learned to stop doing. After years of comparison, rejection, self-doubt, and trying to follow every piece of advice about what a successful writer should write, produce, and promote, she has learned to “retire the superwoman cape.”

Her encouragement to beginning Christian writers who are called to write is wonderfully freeing: stop trying to be somebody else. Pay attention to the work God has actually given you, write what you are naturally drawn to write, and keep the main thing the main thing—the message He has entrusted to you.
